Look over there!
That is the Martial Glacier.
From the top of the glacier you can enjoy amazing views of Ushuaia – the southernmost city in the world. We climbed this on our first day in Ushuaia over the Easter break.
Danny was feeling in his element as an experienced mountain man.
Whereas I was complaining that the chairlift was closed (it only operates in the summer peak season … damn!).
On the bright side, Mother Nature gave us a beautiful snowy backdrop that day – the first snow only arrived the night before.
The first part of the walk was easy enough with beautiful red and golden pine trees lining the way.
(Note to self: Need to buy more attractive winter trekking gear)
Then came the real climb with snow, ice and serious slope.
And strong winds blowing mini snowstorms our way.
There was so much snow everywhere it looked like we were walking on the moon.
I’m staring out into the distance thinking, “Are we there yet?!”
Occasionally you need to turn around and see the view to remind yourself why you are climbing this monster glacier.
Danny led the way to the top.
And laughed in victory when he arrived.
Why do all boys think they are Superman?
(P.S. This Save the Duck jacket was the best – super technical and unbelievably warm. North Face quality at a fraction of the price.)
Meanwhile, I was still trudging along and making my way up to the viewpoint.
Did a little jump when I finally got there. Yippee!
Strutted my way to the top.
Is it just me or do I look like an Ewok from Star Wars?
Finally, the view of Ushuaia as promised.
And proof that we stood here at the end of the world.
The way down the glacier was a lot quicker. Basically I just stumbled and rolled down the snow until we reached the bottom.
Here is the view when I fell on my ass (which happened quite a few times actually :p )
Plenty more Ushuaia adventures to come in the next few days. Thanks for reading!
