Time to drink some champagne in Champagne! I cannot believe it has taken me six months of living in Fontainebleau to drive two hours away to visit Champagne. In June, we rounded up a car of great company to finally make the trip (with special thanks to Eduard as designated driver).
Reims and Épernay are home to all the top champagne houses, many of which offer tours and tastings to thirsty travellers. We made a beeline to Épernay and booked our cave tours en route driving there. Luckily, Moet & Chandon and GH Mumm were happy to host us last minute.
I foolishly thought we would be frolicking around rows of grapes all day. As it turns out, the production and cellaring of champagne happens in caves that lie beneath the vineyards (obviously… 😀 ). So we spent most of our time lurking in cool and dark underground caves, learning about the champagne production process.
Needless to say, we ended each tour with a refreshing drop and a few extra casks to take home.
