I’ve been hiding in Singapore since the beginning of September (other than a sneaky trip to Italy!). When I applied for INSEAD, I was dead certain about staying in France for the whole year. I had no desire to visit the Singapore campus at all. Singapore is too close to home for me, both geographically and culturally. There’s not much nature to explore, and it’s humid as hell. Yet somehow I’ve been pleasantly surprised about how much I like it here.

In Singapore, everything works efficiently (unlike France). Places are open late and on Sundays (unlike … okay you get the gist). People are friendly and treat me like a local. I can practice my Chinese, but English will do just fine. There’s good Asian food. There’s Uber. There’s outdoor swimming pools. All these things I desperately missed while living in Fontainebleau, but hadn’t realised until now.

We are deep into recruitment season and I confess that I’m seriously considering options in Singapore and Hong Kong. This news is to my mother’s happiness, as well as to my own surprise. It’s been a stressful time with applications and interviews, but I’ve felt at home in Asia and I’m not quite ready to leave. There are some strong reasons for me to be here and it’s also much easier to get home to (or have visitors from) Australia. Perhaps it’s time to stop pushing away things that are easy and good for me, and start making the most of those opportunities …
